The survey was developed to elicit perspectives of principals involved in the initial implementation of the Schools: Evaluation for Improvement Approach in 75 schools across New Zealand. The survey items were developed in collaboration with the Education Review Office to ensure questions reflected key domains of interest. The survey incorporated Likert scale items, and open-ended items.

A quality, inclusive education makes a huge difference for disabled learners. With good education, these children and young people have better learning and life outcomes, and are more likely to complete secondary schooling and go on to further study and employment. ERO looked at how well the New Zealand education system is supporting these learners, to get a good understanding of what’s working and what needs to improve.

In this paper, Timperley begins by discussing the very limited nature of the research literature relating to the impacts of external reviews, adding that this has done nothing to dampen enthusiasm for them or to slow their spread. Nearly every educational jurisdiction that has an external review system mixes both accountability and improvement purposes, setting up an inherent tension.

Research evidence shows early in a child’s life is a critical time in terms of the rapid language development that takes place, particularly in the first two to three years.

In her introduction, Thornton says that there is a lack of empirical research focused on effective leadership practice in early childhood education. This mirrors a silence on the subject in the original Te Whāriki (1996). The recent revision of Te Whāriki (2017) provides specific guidance under each of the strands, but this is directed at kaiako leadership rather than positional or professional leadership.
