Te Ara Poutama Indicators of quality for early childhood education: what matters most

Te Ara Poutama is the core of Ngā Ara Whai Hui: Quality Framework for Evaluation and Improvement in Early Childhood Services. This is the framework for ERO’s approaches to reviewing early childhood services. The indicators, for outcomes and processes, are a central resource for use by ERO and the services themselves in evaluating quality in early childhood education and identifying where improvement is needed.

School Evaluation Indicators

The Education Review Office (ERO) first introduced evaluation indicators in 2003, revising them in 2010. This new version reflects a deepening understanding of how schools improve, and the role that evaluation plays in that process. It also reflects a strengthened relationship between ERO’s approaches to evaluation in English-medium and Māori-medium settings. It supports external and internal evaluation of schools.

This report finds that many learners from ethnic communities are succeeding in education but encounter racism, isolation, and lack of cultural understanding. An Alternative Education? Support for our most disengaged young people

Internal evaluation as a catalyst for change

Essential for early childhood services to address non-compliance

Review findings over the last few years have identified a growing concern about the rate of non-compliance with regulatory standards and associated licensing criteria in early childhood services.

Over the last three years, ERO found only a slight improvement in the percentage of services meeting regulatory standards from 74-76% in 2020 to 80% in 2022. Services with non-compliance that pose an unacceptable risk to children rose by 4%, from 8% in 2020 to 12% in 2022.

Thriving at school? Education for disabled learners in schools

The Education Review Office (ERO), in partnership with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) and the Office for Disability Issues (ODI), looked at how well the education system is supporting disabled learners in schools. We found that we need to improve education for disabled learners so they can thrive. Working together: How teacher aides can have the most impact - Summary

Teacher aides can make a real difference for learners. They have a wide range of valued roles and responsibilities, and can enhance learner outcomes by drawing on positive relationships, good training, collaborative practices, and cultural expertise. ERO was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and NZEI Te Riu Roa to find out what good teacher aide practice and support looks like. This summary gives an overview of what we learnt.
