2 Context of the Service

Go Bananas Childcare Kelston is one of 15 education and care services governed by the Go Bananas Childcare organisation. A team of directors oversees organisational operations, and a centre manager is responsible for daily management of the service. Most of the children enrolled are from diverse backgrounds, including a small number of Māori children.

3 Summary of findings

Children’s learning and development is supported by caring relationships with adults. Children up to the age of three years are well engaged in learning spaces that actively promote their physical wellbeing. They have opportunities to develop understandings of how to interact positively with others through teachers’ responsive and respectful practices.

The environment, and how teachers present resources for children, generally supports the learning and development of older children. Leaders and ERO agree that teachers need to better support these children to engage in complex play that extends their thinking and encourages them to explore.

Teaching strategies that recognise success for Māori children are at the beginning stages of being integrated into the curriculum. Leaders acknowledge the need to continue developing teachers’ shared understanding of culturally responsive teaching practices for Māori, Pacific and children of diverse ethnicities. Children with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their individual goals through positive partnerships with parents and external agencies.

Assessment and planning processes to support children’s learning processes are established. Leaders and teachers are yet to fully explore the learning outcomes of Te Whāriki, the early childhood curriculum, or use these to inform curriculum planning, assessment and evaluation processes. Parents and whānau have opportunities to be involved in their child’s learning at the service.

Relational trust within teaching teams supports collaboration in curriculum design. Leaders provide conditions that support improvements to teaching practices. The organisation’s planning and priorities for improvement are becoming aligned to their strategic goals and vision.

4 Improvement actions

Go Bananas Childcare Kelston will include the following actions in its Quality Improvement Planning:

  • Continue to develop the collective capability of teachers to have a shared understanding of children’s learning and development in relation to Te Whāriki
  • Develop a shared understanding about how evaluation for improvement can contribute to better-quality assessment for learning practices. This includes knowing about and using outcomes indicators, to help leaders and teachers evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practices in improving outcomes for individuals and groups of children.

5 Management Assurance on Legal Requirements

Before the review, the staff and management of Go Bananas Childcare Kelston completed an ERO Assurance Statement and Self-Audit Checklist. In these documents they attested that they have taken all reasonable steps to meet their legal obligations related to:

  • curriculum
  • premises and facilities
  • health and safety practices
  • governance, management and administration.

During the review, ERO looked at the service’s systems for managing the following areas that have a potentially high impact on children's wellbeing:

  • emotional safety (including positive guidance and child protection)
  • physical safety (including supervision; sleep procedures; accidents; medication; hygiene; excursion policies and procedures)
  • suitable staffing (including qualification levels; safety checking; teacher registration; ratios)
  • relevant evacuation procedures and practices.

All early childhood services are required to promote children's health and safety and to regularly review their compliance with legal requirements.

Background

Go Bananas Childcare Kelston is one of 14 education and care services governed by the Go Bananas Childcare organisation. A team of directors oversees operations with support from two area managers and a curriculum advisor. A qualified centre manager is responsible for daily management of the service. This is the first ERO review of the service which opened in 2021.

Summary of Review Findings

Adults providing education and care engage in meaningful, positive interactions to enhance children’s learning and nurture reciprocal relationships. The unique place of Māori as tangata whenua is acknowledged and children are given opportunities to learn about the cultural heritages of both parties to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The service curriculum is consistent with Te Whāriki, the early childhood curriculum. It is informed by planning and assessment that demonstrates an understanding of children’s learning and development.

Teachers are taking positive steps to acknowledge the aspirations held by parents and whānau for their children. The service curriculum is responsive to children as confident learners. Children’s preferences are respected, and they are encouraged to be involved in decisions about their own learning experiences.

Key Next Steps

Next steps include:

  • evaluating how well the curriculum is helping to achieve the organisation’s priorities for children’s learning and how this information is used to improve teaching practices

  • continuing to develop the collective capacity of the new teaching team to have a shared understanding of children’s learning and development.

General Information about Assurance Reviews

All services are licensed under the Education (Early Childhood Services) Regulations 2008. The legal requirements for early childhood services also include the Licensing Criteria for Education and Care Services 2008.

Services must meet the standards in the regulations and the requirements of the licensing criteria to gain and maintain a licence to operate.

ERO undertakes an Akanuku | Assurance Review process in any centre-based service:

  • having its first ERO review – including if it is part of a governing organisation

  • previously identified as ‘not well placed’ or ‘requiring further development’

  • that has moved from a provisional to a full licence

  • that have been re-licenced due to a change of ownership

  • where an Akanuku | Assurance Review process is determined to be appropriate.

Management Assurance on Legal Requirements

All early childhood services are required to promote children’s health and safety and to regularly review their compliance with legal requirements. Before the review, the staff and management of a service completed an ERO Centre Assurance Statement and Self-Audit Checklist. In these documents they attested that they have taken all reasonable steps to meet their legal obligations related to:

  • curriculum

  • premises and facilities

  • health and safety practices

  • governance, management and administration.

As part of an Akanuku | Assurance Review ERO assesses whether the regulatory standards are being met. In particular, ERO looks at a service’s systems for managing the following areas that have a potentially high impact on children's wellbeing:

  • emotional safety (including positive guidance and child protection)

  • physical safety (including supervision; sleep procedures; accidents; medication; hygiene; excursion policies and procedures)

  • suitable staffing (including qualification levels; safety checking; teacher certification; ratios)

  • relevant evacuation procedures and practices.

As part of an Akanuku | Assurance Review ERO also gathers and records evidence through:

  • discussions with those involved in the service

  • consideration of relevant documentation, including the implementation of health and safety systems

  • observations of the environment/premises, curriculum implementation and teaching practice.
