2 Te Horopaki

E tū ana Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Āwhina ki te taha o te marae o Te Āwhina, ki Motueka. I te tau 2016, i hūnuku te kōhanga reo nā ngā whakawhanaketanga i te marae. Koia nei anake te kōhanga reo ki Motueka.

3 Te Aronga o te Aromātai

He pēhea rawa te whai painga o ngā mokopuna nā te arotahinga o ngā akoranga me te atawhai?

Ka whakarato te whānau i tētahi taiao ako e whai hua ana ki te poipoi i te ako a ngā mokopuna me tō rātou waiora.  

4 Ngā Whakaaturanga – Mana Whakahaere

He pai te whakahaeretanga o ngā whakaritenga ki te kōhanga reo. Ka ārahi te mahere ā-tau i ngā mahi i te tari me ngā kawenga ngātahi. He pai te whai wāhi atu a te whānau. Tū ai ngā hui ā-whānau i ia te wā, ā, he kaha hoki te taetae atu. Kua whakaritea ngā kaupapa here me ngā tukanga e pā ana ki te hauora, te haumaru, me te whakahaeretanga o ngā kaimahi, ā, ka hāngai hoki ki ngā herenga ā-ture. Ko te ako a ngā mokopuna, ko tō rātou waiora hoki te aronga o ngā whakataunga.

E whakamōhiotia ana te mahere rautaki ki Te Ara Tūāpae me ngā kōrero tuku iho. He matawhānui te mahere, ā, ka tautuhi i ngā kaupapa matua o te pae tawhiti me te pae tata, ā, ka ārahi i ngā whāinga me ngā wawata o te whānau mō meāke nei. Ka whai hua ngā mokopuna nā te ārahitanga whai mōhiohio o te whānau, me te aronga ki ō rātou pūmanawa, ō rātou matea, me ō rātou ngākau nuitanga.

• te tū tika o ngā kaimahi, tae atu ki te tika o ngā tohu mātauranga, ngā mahi arowhai a ngā pirihimana, me te tatauranga ki waenga i te kaiako me te tamaiti 

• ngā whakaritenga ohotata me ngā tikanga ohotata e pā ana ki te rū whenua, te ahi, te waipuke, te tai āniwhaniwha, me te mate urutā.

7 Ngā kōrero e pā ana ki te Kōhanga Reo

1 Introduction

The Education Review Office (ERO) in collaboration with whānau, leaders, kaimahi and their communities develop evaluation insights that foster accountability and improvement, identify progress and build evaluation capability. This report reflects their systems, operations and management practices. ERO reports provide important information for hapū and iwi.

2 Context

Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Āwhina is located next to Te Marae o Te Āwhina in Motueka. In 2016, the kōhanga reo was relocated due to developments on the marae. This is the only kōhanga reo in Motueka.

3 Evaluation Focus

How well do mokopuna benefit from focussed learning and care?

The whānau provides a positive learning environment that nurtures mokopuna learning and wellbeing.

4 Findings - Mana Whakahaere

The operations of the kōhanga reo is well-managed. An annual plan guides administrative duties and shared responsibilities. There is good whānau involvement and participation. Whānau hui are held regularly and are well attended. Health, safety and personnel management policies and procedures are in place and align to legislation. Mokopuna learning and wellbeing is the focus for decision making.

The strategic plan is informed by Te Ara Tuapae me ngā kōrero tuku iho. The comprehensive plan identifies long and short-term priorities and guides whānau goals and aspirations into the future. Mokopuna benefit from informed whānau leadership that is focused on their strengths, needs and interests.

Employment documentation is relevant and purposeful. These include job descriptions and employment contracts provided by Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust. Appraisal practices focus on collective responsibility and enhancing kaimahi practice. The whānau have a clear focus on building personal and professional capability and being positive role models for mokopuna. 

Kaimahi have processes in place for planning and assessment that responds to the individual uniqueness of each mokopuna. The mahere ako identifies programme content, strategies for implementation and resources for the learning environment. Assessment methods capture moments of mokopuna learning and progress. These include observations, portfolios and learning stories. Whānau are informed of what mokopuna are doing and learning.    

Key Next Steps

Kaimahi are developing their understandings of programme evaluation. They hold regular hui to discuss the learning programme. The next step for kaimahi is to reflect on what the successes were, what didn’t work and what needs to happen to improve the quality of the programme. Recording these decisions will strengthen evaluation and ensure learning experiences are responsive to mokopuna interests and needs.

5 Assurance on Legal Requirement

During the evaluation, ERO looked at systems for managing the following areas:

• emotional safety including positive guidance and child protection

• physical safety including supervision, sleep procedures, accidents, medication, excursion policy and procedures

• suitable staffing including appropriate qualifications, police vetting, ratios

• emergency procedures and practices for earthquakes, fire, flood, tsunami and pandemic.

6 Recommendation

ERO and the kōhanga reo whānau recommends continuing to work with the District Office to address the key next step identified in this report.

7 Information about the Kōhanga Reo
