Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Duntroon School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Duntroon School is a rural primary school in North Otago and caters for students in Years 1-8.

Duntroon School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • support all students to achieve success in their learning through engagement with a rich and balanced local expression of the NZ Curriculum

  • support all students through effective pedagogy and ongoing review of practice to improve outcomes in progress and achievement

  • support staff and students to build their teaching and learning capability, knowledge, and skills in Te Reo and Tikanga Māori.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Duntroon School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate to what extent the local curriculum and teaching practice support all students' sense of belonging, engagement in learning and equity and excellence in achievement.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is that the school would like to develop a local curriculum which is culturally responsive to student and community voice and includes local content, digital fluency, and structured literacy.

The school expects to see the ongoing improvement of student achievement in reading, writing and mathematic, and excellence and equity in the achievement of all students.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to enhance student and staff wellbeing:

  • teachers effectively use research, different teaching approaches and regular evaluation to identify what initiatives have the greatest impact for students whose progress needs to be accelerated

  • there is a commitment to growing staff capability to support and promote student achievement and engagement.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • strengthening and modifying the local curriculum to integrate digital fluency and structured literacy and make it more relevant, localised and engaging for the students

  • using the Duntroon accelerated learning model to monitor the progress of all students and implement specific interventions and deliberate acts of teaching to accelerate the progress of target students.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
