Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within ten months of the Education Review Office and St Peter’s Catholic School (Cambridge) working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz.

Context

St Peter’s Catholic School is a state integrated primary school located in Cambridge and provides education for students in Years 1-8. A new principal was appointed for 2021. The school has strong links to the St Peter’s Catholic Parish.

St Peter’s Catholic School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • strengthen the use of assessment to make a measurable difference to student engagement and achievement

  • strengthen cultural competency and ensure Treaty of Waitangi obligations are honoured

  • strengthen collaborative relationships that make a difference educationally.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on St Peter’s Catholic School (Cambridge) website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well school conditions are contributing to improving student achievement and enabling equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners. The school is aware of the need to implement consistent assessment practices, develop and sustain cultural competency and empower parents and whānau in quality learning partnerships.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the need to be able to access reliable school wide data to monitor, report and act on trends, patterns and levels of equity for groups of students

  • the opportunity it provides to strengthen partnerships for learning and culturally responsive practices that uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations and enable an inclusive learning environment.

The school expects to see deliberate actions implemented to identify and meet the needs of individual or groups of students who may require additional support or challenge with their learning.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to enable equitable and excellent learner outcomes:

  • a well-established plan that clarifies actions for improvement

  • school culture and values that support students to be socially and emotionally competent and resilient

  • provision of ongoing professional learning, mentoring, and coaching for staff that builds collective capacity.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • embedding robust assessment practices to strengthen the consistency and reliability of data and improve collation, analysis, and reporting

  • engaging more purposefully with parents and whānau to strengthen collaborative learning partnerships

  • deepening te ao Māori understanding to enable a more inclusive and authentic local curriculum.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
