Lichfield School

Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within six months of the Education Review Office and Lichfield School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Lichfield School is located in the South Waikato near Putāruru. It caters for learners in Years 1 to 6. The well-established leadership team continue in their roles.

Lichfield School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • raising achievement for all, with a particular focus on those who are not yet at expected curriculum level

  • to further develop learner agency and self-efficacy to enable students to meet or exceed expectations and to experience success

  • to strengthen the responsive and localised curriculum to meet the needs and aspirations of the community

  • to continue to build and enhance capacity in the school through ongoing professional learning for equity and excellence.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Lichfield School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively they are accelerating the progress of learners who are not yet achieving at the expected curriculum level.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the school recognises that a proportion of learners are yet to make accelerated progress

  • the school aspires to achieve equity in outcomes for Māori learners

  • to measure the effectiveness of current strategies with greater accuracy and confidence.

The school expects to see:

  • accelerated progress in literacy and numeracy for those who are not yet at expected curriculum level

  • parity in achievement for Māori learners

  • a refined approach to the use of teaching strategies for acceleration.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support it in accelerating the progress of learners who are not yet achieving at expected curriculum level:

  • leaders who have established a culture of continuous improvement, focused on raising outcomes for all

  • learners with identified needs who are well-supported in an inclusive environment

  • a strong commitment to ongoing professional learning and development to support capacity building across the school

  • well-established systems and processes to support school change initiatives.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • developing the detailed planning for the internal evaluation aligned to the strategic direction

  • ongoing professional learning to inform teacher practice

  • resourcing dedicated to the focus of raising achievement for priority learners.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
