We do this through our institutional reviews and system-wide evaluation and research that is focused on the provision of education and the care of learners. As I periodically do through ERO’s Insights Newsletter, I want to share some of our findings with you.

Promoting and Supporting Improvement in Schools through External Review

In this paper, Timperley begins by discussing the very limited nature of the research literature relating to the impacts of external reviews, adding that this has done nothing to dampen enthusiasm for them or to slow their spread. Nearly every educational jurisdiction that has an external review system mixes both accountability and improvement purposes, setting up an inherent tension.

Responding to the Covid-19 crisis: Supporting Auckland NCEA students

In 2020, Auckland students were particularly affected by Covid-19 and extra support was provided to them. Following this, ERO undertook an evaluation of three Te Kura programmes aimed at supporting Auckland NCEA students. ERO evaluated the collection and use of assessment information in schools in 2006. The evaluation concluded that more work can be done to improve assessment practice in schools.
