State or state-integrated schools/kura that are new, merged, newly state-integrated or changing their status have a New School Assurance Review after they have completed their Readiness Review. We do the review within the first year of the school’s operation. This ERO report has been written to help schools develop enterprise learning. Seven case studies present the challenges and benefits of enterprise as authentic teaching and learning. Each of these studies show what students have achieved in different enterprise activities. They discuss what leaders and teachers have done; both those who have been supportive of an enterprise learning approach and those who have been hesitant in adapting the way they teach.

ERO evaluated how well schools included students with high needs. Approximately three percent of the student population have significant physical, sensory, neurological, psychiatric, behavioural or intellectual impairment. ERO’s evaluation showed that approximately half of the schools in the study demonstrated inclusive practice, while 30 percent had ‘pockets of inclusive practice’ and 20 percent had few inclusive practices.

Covid-19 has shown us how important science is and, with science-related issues such as climate change and vaccines increasingly impacting on society, it is essential that we have high quality science education.

Principals are crucial to the quality of education. A growing number of principals across New Zealand are new to the role. In 2023, more than a third of principals have been in the role for less than five years, an increase from a quarter in 2014. New research from ERO has found that only a quarter of new principals feel prepared when they start.

The Education Review Office (ERO) visited 12 schools to see how they were preparing their students as 21st century learners. Leaders were innovative, rethinking and transforming teaching and learning to equip students with the knowledge, skills and qualifications required for their future. In doing so, they also maximised learning opportunities offered by digital technology and flexible learning spaces.
